Week 14 Music Update
Hello Steele Families!

It is hard to believe that we only have 12 days until Fall Break! We are almost there and are in the transition time of the end of marching season for band to concert season for all groups.I have said it before, but it is worth repeating - I am so lucky to do what I do, and work with this incredible group of students!!! Thank you, students for your continued enthusiasm, commitment, preparation and support of me and each other. You are all integral pieces to this amazing puzzle of our performing arts! Parents, thank you for the amazing support you offer to our students, to me, and to our department! There is a lot of information in this email so please read until the end.

Steele Regiment had another wonderful performance at the Mira Mesa Competition. Their score went up from a 55.4 to a 62.6! Our percussion and color guard also took first place in their division and even beat many groups in divisions about their own. Congratulations Steele Regiment! This week coming up is our home stretch in our goal to make it to State Championships. The students have been working hard and it is showing. We have two competitions this week. On Wednesday, we perform at Westview High School. Click here for the information for this competition. We will be leaving on the bus during 4th block. On Saturday, we have our last regular season competition at RBV. Click here for the information for this competition.

The holidays are quickly approaching and we wanted to gently remind you that if you are shopping, consider using the raise right fundraiser. It is simple, cost effective, and the best way to do online shopping. There is no split with a company, just gift cards (electronic) for you! Click Here for instructions. The staff uses this all the time and some families have even paid for all of their trips and cougar pledges through this app! When shopping online, consider using this program!
As we switch to concert season, our winter concert on December 13th! Congratulate your favorite musician or color guard member in the print program of this year’s winter concert! Here’s how:
  • Spotlight your favorite musician or color guard member with an ad or a “shout out” that you can personalize with your own greeting and photos.
  • Send your best wishes to “break a leg” and highlight their accomplishments!
  • Show your pride in their hard work through their years in music or if it is their first season in performing arts!
  • Create a keepsake for Seniors who may be performing in their last Performing Arts Concert.
  • Get family and friends involved to send their best wishes!
  • Help the music department as all proceeds will benefit the students enrolled in the SCHS Music Department.
HOW: Click Here to fill out the form and send in your payment through cash, check, or paypal donation (if you use this method, please send a follow up email to hluck@schscougars.org to ensure payment was received).

Orchestra, Band, and Color Guard Families, become a Music Sponsor and reserve your seats for all concerts! You can be one of our awesome sponsors for our program (once cougar pledges are paid in full) and receive benefits such as reserved seating for concerts, name recognition in programs, our undying love and gratitude for you forever. :-) Click here for more details or email hluck@schscougars.org to become a sponsor!

Steele Regiment Families of Freshmen and Sophomore students, as part of our health education curriculum this semester we are implementing sexual health education, per California Law. For the past 4 years we have partnered with San Diego Youth Services to provide comprehensive sexual health education to our students. We will begin implementation November 14thth-December 9th The curriculum, Positive Prevention Plus, provides medically accurate information about all contraceptives, STIs and educates students on assertive communication skills to help youth avoid or delay sex and avoid unprotected sex. The curriculum also encourages youth to initiate conversations with responsible adults and health care providers about sexual health to further enhance their decision making ability.

The reason why we are implementing this curriculum in our performing arts class is due to the fact our students receive an ENS waiver for ENS 2 after completing two consecutive years of our class. Part of the requirement of that waiver is for students to complete the additional health unit attached to that curriculum.

Should you wish to opt your child out please send your students teacher an email prior to implementation so that we can arrange alternative instruction for that time. I have attached a formal notification letter, fast facts about the California Healthy Youth Act and an outline of the lessons with a parent/guardian guide.

Our music department measures success in its ability to provide meaningful experiences through the pursuit of excellence, the value of hard work, the lessons of teamwork, by empowering students to express themselves through music, and by the life lessons we learn through this work. Thank you for your interest, positivity, and support of our Music Department at SCHS!  It is an honor to work with each of you!**
