What to expect for Colorguard Students

Below you will find information on the following:
  1. Expectation
  2. Class Time and Grades (2017-2018)
  3. Home Football Games
  4. Competitions
  5. Band Camp

1. Expectation
You are now a member of the Steele Canyon High School Colorguard. We are a fairly new organization that is building and hopefully establishing a classy reputation. Here are a few rules and regulations to follow to ensure we are giving off the best image possible.

Attendance:
It is imperative that you do not miss any practices or performances. When one person is missing, it affects the entire team in many ways. If you must miss due to emergency or something that absolutely cannot be rescheduled, you must contact an instructor and fill out a green form. If no effort is made to make up the practice, your grade will suffer. In case of sickness, you will be allowed to sit out and take notes, with a parent letter. If sickness is severe, you will be expected to make up the practice when you are well, within 2 days of returning to school.
Tardiness:
Being late will not be tolerated. Pushups, running or other extra work will be assigned. We understand that most students do not drive, so we are asking for parents’ cooperation on this matter. The later we begin practice, the later we will finish. On that note, students will be dismissed from practice at the time specified. They will then need to put their equipment away and walk outside to be picked up. 10 minutes is usually enough for this.
Dress code:
You will be expected to dress in a classy manner, in accordance with school dress code. Tank tops will be allowed after school hours, but no bra straps are to show. Shorts should be tasteful. In uniform, no food or drinks are allowed, except water. While in uniform, you will be expected to behave in a way that speaks well of our program.

2. Class Time and Grades (2017-2018)
Everyone will be enrolled in the colorguard class, for which you will receive a grade and performing art credit. You will be graded on attendance, improvement, attitude and pass offs. You will receive a copy of the pass off sheets and will be expected to complete it according to your grade and years of experience. These are basic skills and if you complete them all as scheduled, you will be prepared to march any independent guard or drum corp.

3. Home Football Games
The call time for home football games is 5:00pm for the guard. You will fix your hair and make up (as specified), get dressed in the correct uniform and start stretching. No necklaces or bracelets are allowed while in uniform (except special, medical alert bracelets). Other piercings such as face or ears must have plain, small studs such as clear diamonds, silver, gold, white pearls or clear plugs. At the pre determined time (usually 6-6:15), you will meet outside to warm up. After warm up, we will take equipment bags to the field and meet the band in the quad to march down with 1 flag. Once on the track, you will stand at parade rest until it is time for the star spangled banner or fight song. During the SSB, you DO NOT move, except to sing. During the fight song, you will perform the routine. After that, we will go into the stands for the game. You will pay attention and cheer for the team. When the band plays, you will dance, clap or do the dance you are taught.
When there are 7 minutes left in the 2nd quarter, we will go down to the track to warm up for half-time. After the performance, we return to the stands to cheer. While in the stands, you are only allowed to drink water. No food or other beverages. Only band members are allowed in the band section. No parents, friends or alumni. If you are on the end, you will not spend the game talking to other people. It is a performance and you are there to support our team, not socialize. After the game, we play the fight song on the track and march up to the band room. When you have changed, cleared the area and checked with the captains and instructors, you may leave. This is usually around 10-10:15.
